Giving You

“There is a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all of time this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.” – Martha Graham

Well said. I block self-expression out of fear. Fear of not being good enough, fear of having others judge, and fear of me judging me, all combine to shut self-expression off. In order to engage with my fear, I started putting my art and poetry on public forums. And just before doing so I would ask myself, “What’s driving this right now? A lot of the time I found myself confronting that needy separate-self wanting attention.

Difficult and challenging at first, I soon realized that whatever I express will have value to others’ perceptions, and even without that, I’m not sharing to gain approval, attention, fame, or wealth. I share because I can and desire to do so, there is no other valid reason to sing songs to the universe, ask a neighborhood bird singing a song to greet the dawn. That’s genuine self-expression!

May you balance in peace today,

Bryan Wagner

  1. The movement never lies
    also the pause
    the world
    the cosmos contains everything
    in himself

    the self
    is a handle
    to the emergency brake
    because man
is not master in his own house

    the other people
    have their own
    the diversity of meaning
    their own values

    the universe
    is the singing
    the human
    in his echo chamber

    every gesture
    makes a statement
    even if one
    the content
    want to conceal for others

  2. I love the example of the birds singing. Even if it’s not the initial purpose, their songs bring such joy to whoever hears them.
I agree, the desire to share is very strong.
